Cupertino Couple Steals Prototype Model for Newest Apple iPad
March 27, 2015
A Cupertino, CA couple stole an unreleased prototype model of the Apple iPad during a recent robbery and kidnapping.
On April 5, a man in his twenties met the man and woman through an online advertisement and the couple took him to a house, Business Insider reports.
Upon arriving at the house, the woman threatened the victim with a knife and the man pepper-sprayed him in the face. The two then stole some $7,500 in cash, as well as the victim’s electronics and prescription medicines, before driving him away from the house.
The victim didn’t contact the sheriff’s office for another five days, BidnessEtc.com reports. He told authorities that one of the items stolen from him had been “a test model iPad from Apple.” It’s unclear whether the victim had the iPad in his possession because he is an Apple employee or if he acquired the device through some other means.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office says the stolen iPad hasn’t yet been recovered, but two arrests have been made so far in the case.
Police arrested Katherine Stump, 20 and Alexander Nejat, 25, both of whom have been arrested for previous cases. The police found multiple phones in the couple’s possession, which they believe were stolen through similar crimes.
The two will likely require a criminal defense lawyer or attorney at law for their case, as first-degree robbery in California carries a prison sentence of three to nine years; for second-degree robbery, the average prison sentence is between two and five years. However, it’s possible that there could have been an eyewitness misidentification in the arrests, as this accounts for 52.3% of wrongful convictions.
While Apple normally keeps their new products under high security, these products are tested in the field on a limited basis before being made available to customers.
